OHS Instruction - Electric Kettle

ESB-IN-C-016

ESB-IN-BW-016

The OHS instruction for using an electric kettle may seem redundant or trivial. In reality, it is essential due to the widespread use of such devices in most workplaces. As it is powered electrically, there is a potential risk of electric shock. The instruction must be displayed in every break room where such appliances are used, as well as in kitchens and food preparation areas. A detailed list of required and prohibited activities is based on general health and safety regulations, and on the often careless behavior of users.

The shared use of appliances in communal areas often leads to a lack of personal responsibility. The more users there are, the higher the chance that damage will be ignored or concealed. The OHS instruction imposes a duty to report such issues, and failure to do so may lead to investigations and consequences. Despite its small size and seemingly low risk, a frayed power cord could lead to a fatal electric shock. This instruction also identifies high-risk scenarios during usage, especially when the device remains plugged in continuously.
